Professor of New Testament

Dr. Bateman’s current academic interests are the general epistles with a specific focus on the Book of Hebrews, the Johannine Epistles, 2 Peter, and Jude. He is currently writing two commentaries on the general epistles. Another interest is second temple history and literature with a focus on how New Testament authors use the Old Testament. In Jesus the Messiah: Promises, Expectations, and Coming of Israel’s King, he, along with co-authors Drs. Johnston and Bock, offer a threefold reading strategy as another way to grapple with Jesus as Messiah.

Yet his academic interests and pursuits are not without an emphasis on learning how to communicate God’s word through preaching and teaching. This is clearly evident in his publication A Workbook for Intermediate Greek: Grammar, Exegesis, Commentary on 1–3 John and forthcoming publication of Interpreting the Psalms for Teaching and Preaching. For Dr. Bateman, studying the Bible is more than an academic exercise; it is an opportunity for transforming people’s lives for Jesus Christ.
