Writing Center

Welcome to the SWBTS Writing Center! Our mission is to improve the research and writing skills of Southwestern's students and faculty. We work together with students to help them become better communicators in the classroom, in the church, and in the world.

To that end, our motto is, "Better writers, not just better papers."

The Writing Center’s main service is providing free one-on-one appointments with students. Our appointments are 50 minutes long and are open to anyone on campus. We help students at any stage of the writing process from brainstorming to formatting. However, we have found that appointments are usually most productive when students have done some writing for their paper but have not yet completed it. Click here to sign up for a Writing Center appointment. Online appointments are also available on our schedule, and students can access them by clicking on the drop-down box titled "Choose your schedule" and selecting "Online Appointments Schedule."

We also provide Writing Center services at Havard and by email to all other off-campus students. Click here to learn more.

Professors can request that we give a class presentation on the Writing Center or a particular aspect of writing. If you are a faculty member and would like to request that a member of the Writing Center staff make a presentation to your class, please click here.

One service that we do not offer is proofreading, because our goal is to teach students how to find and correct their own errors.

For more information on who we are and what we do, visit our Frequently Asked Questions page and our Blackboard page (students and faculty only).

About Us

The Writing Center opened in 2003 with two mentors, a room in Roberts Library, and a paper sign-up sheet. Since then, we have added mentors to the Writing Center staff, served hundreds of students, and held thousands of appointments. Our sign-up system is now online. Through the years, however, our vision has been the same: empowering students and faculty to write their best for the glory of God and His work in the world.
