Technology Skills Requirements

There are no special computer skills that are required by Southwestern Online that are not also required for all traditional classes at SWBTS. Most seminary students in regular classes possess the skill necessary for online classes because even traditional classes at SWBTS employ the same software (Blackboard, Word for Windows, PowerPoint, pdf files) as Southwestern Online classes.

The following statement from the SWBTS Student Handbook pertains to all students at SWBTS:

Computer Requirement

All seminary students will be expected to have regular access to a personal computer and an Internet provider. SWBTS uses Microsoft Office 2007 or 2010, and documents must be submitted to the seminary in appropriate formats.

Here is a full listing of technology skills all Southwestern Online students should have. Most incoming students can already possess these skills or can easily acquire them. Most of these skills are covered in the E-License class. You can find this helpful class in your Blackboard account.

  1. Use a supported web browser. We recommend that you use Firefox as your browser if you use a PC.
  2. Navigate a web browser in order to do searches.
  3. Use the SWBTS Robert’s Library Knowledge Portal.
  4. Do an Advanced Search from the Roberts Library online.
  5. Use the “My Account” feature of the Roberts Library online.
  6. Log on to and off of an Internet Service Provider.
  7. Log on to the SWBTS web page.
  8. Open and close Blackboard from the SWBTS web page.
  9. Navigate through the courses on Blackboard.
  10. Upload documents to a class site on Blackboard (following the simple instructions).
  11. Open and close a word processor (such as Microsoft Word for Windows).
  12. Compose a document on a word processor.
  13. Use spell check on a word processor.
  14. Format a document using StyleEase on a word processor.
  15. Save a document on a word processor.
  16. Download the following readers: Microsoft Word for Windows, Microsoft PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat.
  17. Open and close the Word reader, PowerPoint reader, and Adobe Acrobat reader.
  18. Open and read documents in the Word reader, PowerPoint reader, and Adobe Acrobat reader.
  19. Download and use an anti-virus software application to protect your files.
  20. Send and receive e-mail. Read e-mail.
  21. Take a quiz or exam on Blackboard (follow the simple online instructions).
  22. Read and post comments on the Blackboard Discussion Board.
