    This degree offers the essentials for ministry, training you in biblical languages, theology, preaching and more. In the M.Div., you’ll also put your knowledge into practice as you share your faith, make disciples and evangelize the nations.

    Through this degree, you can build on your undergraduate theological training by replacing introductory courses with advanced electives. The student must have a theological undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

    Tailored for students who want to dig deeply into theology, biblical studies, philosophy and ethics, this degree can prepare you for Southwestern’s doctoral program. The M.A.Th. builds upon a minimum of 30 undergraduate hours of Bible and theology prerequisites.

    This program will train you through advanced classes in archaeological methods, the history of the Bible lands and ancient languages. You’ll have on-the-job training through Southwestern’s digs and surveys at Tel Gezer, Israel, and Kourion, Cyprus.

  • Doctor of Ministry

    This degree will further equip you for ministry without requiring you to relocate to Fort Worth. Two seminars, each a year in length, will include two-week classroom sessions in the summer and conferences each fall and spring that complement your ministry schedule. Throughout the year, you will maintain your academic studies through online resources. During your final year of study, you will complete your dissertation.

    The Bachelor of Arts in Music at The College at Southwestern, which is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, contains all of the courses in the Bachelor of Arts in Humanities except the languages, physical education, and fine arts.     Student wives are a priority at Southwestern. This unique program combines practical, spiritual, and academic studies to equip a ministering wife to join her husband in the educational pilgrimage.     The Homemaking Concentration prepares women to model the characteristics of a godly woman as outlined in Scripture. Students gain understanding of biblical homemaking and focus on personal vocational assessment. This concentration challenges women both intellectually and practically, equipping them to understand and engage today’s culture and impact women and families for Christ. The Homemaking Concentration is available within the Bachelor of Science in Biblical Studies and the Bachelor of Arts in Humanities in the College at Southwestern.

  • Women’s Ministry Concentration in the Terry School of Church and Family Ministries and the School of Theology

    The Master of Arts in Christian Education is designed primarily for the person who plans to perform various educational ministries in the church. Twenty-six hours of this 64-hour program consist of biblical and theological studies.

    The concentration in Women’s Ministry equips female students with practical ministry experience as well as in-depth training in leadership and administration skills for the local church. Women in this program will acquire insights into the key spiritual and cultural issues facing today’s women as well as develop the skills needed for woman to woman ministry. This concentration is also available in the School of Theology, offering a Master of Divinity with a concentration in Women’s Ministry.

  • Women's Studies Concentration in the School of Theology

    The Southwestern M.Div. prepares students for the broadest range of Christian ministries, especially in local churches. Students receive training in classical theological disciplines such as Old Testament, New Testament, church history and historical theology, systematic theology, ethics, and philosophy, evangelism, and missions.

    The concentration in Women’s Studies prepares female theology students for the unique needs and challenges of women communicating theological truth to women by developing competence in the biblical languages and exposition. Students will gain a foundation for a biblical theology of womanhood and gender roles as well as become equipped to address contemporary issues associated with this paradigm. This program trains women to become students of their cultures in order to effectively reach other women through evangelism, missions and discipleship.

    The Southwestern Doctor of Ministry degree helps those currently in ministry positions to think biblically and critically about practices of ministry and to articulate and demonstrate a biblical vision for ministry practice. The Doctor of Ministry degree is designed to sharpen the skills of those already involved in ministry and to enhance their effectiveness in God’s service. The degree offers training opportunities in both traditional and emerging ministries of the church.

  • Women’s Ministry Minor for the Doctor of Philosophy in the Terry School of Church and Family Ministries

    The Doctor of Philosophy degree of the Jack D. Terry School of Church and Family Ministries began in 1924 and is one of the oldest and largest of its kind in the nation. Students may minor in women’s ministry as a part of the Ph.D. degree. This degree is designed specifically for the preparation of highly specialized and competent professionals for various aspects of leadership in Christian Education. The program is designed to discover and nurture sound scholarship, meaningful research, and the interdependence of theory and practice. The Ph.D. degree is conferred on the basis of high scholarship and research skill demonstrated by the student’s resident work, examinations, dissertation and vocational experience.

    The Doctor of Philosophy program prepares women to serve as teachers and writers in specialized areas of theology. Especially for women, a mentoring component is included in order to connect women’s studies with the student’s primary field of study. The Ph.D. program emphasizes the attainment of expertise in a theological discipline, resting upon competence in both biblical and non-biblical languages through quality research and critical evaluative skills, resulting in a significant contribution to the student's field. Ph.D. study requires a high degree of originality, independence, analytical research, judgment, and skill in articulating research findings.

    The uniqueness of this degree allows students to complete their course of study while serving on the mission field. The church planting experience occurs under the auspices of the International Mission Board’s Journeyman, International Service Corps or Career Apprentice programs.

    This degree equips students to start and develop effective churches in a North American context. Students can complete their course of study while serving off-campus as a church starter. The church planting experience occurs under the auspices of a partnership between the North American Mission Board and Baptist state conventions.

    The Advanced Master of Divinity allows students to build upon undergraduate theological training by taking advanced courses in place of the introductory courses in the regular Master of Divinity curriculum.

  • 2+2 Program

    Master’s Track. Spend two years in the classroom and complete your remaining coursework on the field. You can work with the International Mission Board to plant churches and engage in cross-cultural discipleship among more than 7,000 people groups (M.Div. with a concentration in International Church Planting).

    Jumpstart 2 + 2. Graduates from the College at Southwestern* can spend two years on the field before returning to Southwestern to complete their master’s degree. Serve with trained field mentors in international church planting contexts, and earn up to 24 hours of master’s-level credit.

  • Doctor of Philosophy

Certificate Programs

  • Certificate in Biblical Studies

    The Certificate in Biblical Studies provides students the opportunity to complete 30 hours of foundational courses. Upon completion of the certificate, students may transfer all hours into the Bachelor of Arts in Humanities.

  • Leadership Certificate in Childhood and Weekday Education

    In order to provide training for the large number of persons providing leadership in the churches in the areas of weekday, preschool, and childhood education, the Leadership Certificate in Childhood and Weekday Education has been developed. Persons may attend classes one weekend a month and receive one hour of seminary credit for each class taken. At the completion of 12 classes (12 seminary hours) the person will receive a certificate from Southwestern Seminary. If, at a later date, the person decides to enter the seminary to work on a bachelor's or master’s degree, those 12 hours may fill electives in the total degree plan. Current students may also enroll in the weekend courses.

  • Leadership Certificate in Women's Ministry

    The purpose of the Leadership Certificate in Women's Ministry program is to equip women as lay leaders and church staff in woman-to-woman ministries in the local church by providing quality training and networking opportunities.

    The Leadership Certificate in Women's Ministry can be acquired by completing 12 hours of course credit. This is accomplished by completing four 3-hour courses taught in the seminar format. Each course consists of one week of classroom instruction, taught by Southwestern faculty and other experts in the field of women's ministry, with an assignment due two weeks after each course. Courses are generally offered one week in the spring and one week in the fall. Courses are also offered at the J. Dalton Havard School for Theological Studies in Houston in weekend formats. It is possible to complete the program in two years. Courses may also be taken for credit in Southwestern's master's programs.

  • Master of Theological Studies + Missions

    The MTS with a concentration in cross-cultural missions provides a fusion of theological training and practical missions experience. This 45-hour degree exists to train missionaries as they serve on the field and is especially adapted to meet the needs of the International Mission Board’s Macedonia Project. The MTS with a concentration in cross-cultural missions will replace Christian apologetics and Bible and moral issues courses with ones in world religions and cross-cultural ethics. It will also add a concentration with nine hours of study in missiology, cross-cultural church planting and evangelism.
