FORT WORTH, Texas (SWBTS) – Southwestern alumnus Johnny Pons has the unique opportunity and difficult task to minister to staff, students and community members of Penn State University, where former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was convicted of serial child molestation in June.
Pons, who graduated from Southwestern with his Master of Divinity in 1990, has served as director of New Life Fellowship—an on-campus ministry—for 22 years. Though growing up a Vanderbilt and Alabama football fan who saw Penn State as “the beast of the East,” Pons says he and his wife, Kathy, have grown to love the Penn State community in State College, Pa. He prays that the school’s nationally watched scandal will give him and his wife a window of opportunity to minister to the wounded and hurting people that need to hear the Gospel and need the healing hand of Christ as they navigate through the turmoil that Sandusky and his actions brought upon the school.
