The Havard School Library is currently hosting a Military Chaplaincy and Soldiers' Bibles display. The collection is housed in 4 curio cabinets and contains Bibles, hymnbooks, chaplains' kits, and other materials from every major war in which the United States has been involved, from the Revolutionary War to the current Global War on Terror.
Items of interest include a surviving page from the Gum Wad Bible, whose pages were used as packing material for Brittish soldiers' muskets; several pocket Bibles carried by soldiers during the Civil War; and numerous examples of metal-plated "Heart Shield" Bibles from World War II and the Korean War. Also included are chaplains' kits and pocket hymnals from the Civil War, World War II, the Vietnam War, and current conflicts.
This display is open for viewing by students and visitors during normal library hours. For more information, please contact Dr. John Laing at 713.634.0011 x226 or by email at jlaing@swbts.edu.
