In addition to solo performing opportunities in recitals and master classes, the School of Church Music and Worship offers a variety of ensembles for students to gain experience in their performing areas and to acquaint themselves with a wide range of repertoire, from the masterpieces of oratorio literature to the latest in worship music for the church. Above all, the ensembles provide the opportunity for glorious moments of communal music making.
The 100-voice Master Chorale presents four major choral concerts annually, including a tradition of annual performances of Handel’s Messiah since 1921. It is the resident chorus for the Fort Worth Symphony and frequently appears in its concerts at the acoustically superb Bass Performance Hall in downtown Fort Worth. The Chorale has recorded 12 critically acclaimed compact discs and presented two American premieres, Jonathan Willcocks's A Great and Glorious Victory and Alexander Grechaninov's Kvalite Boga and three world premieres including Willcocks's From Darkness to Light and the premieres of Stephen Johnson's Peace Ascends and William "Mac" Davis's Excursion at Avery Fisher Hall in New York City's Lincoln Center in 2011. Southwestern Singers is a mixed vocal ensemble of 25-30 auditioned members. The choir sings in chapel regularly and presents concerts 2 -3 times annually. Southwestern Singers also joins with the Southwestern Master Chorale for Southwestern's annual Gala of Sacred Music concert. In 2011, the group performed with the Master Chorale at Avery Fisher Hall, part of Lincoln Center in New York City.
The Orchestra is a full symphonic ensemble of strings, winds, and percussion that performs literature from the standard symphonic repertoire in association with the Fort Worth Civic Orchestra.
Students will participate in small chamber ensembles, such as a string quartet, brass quintet, woodwind quintet, or mixed ensemble, and perform standard chamber music repertoire.
Guitar Ensemble is designed for students to improve their skills in reading, comping, and improvising. The ensemble performs a wide variety of musical styles.
Combo Lab stresses the development and refinement of improvisation and performance skills in a small ensemble environment performing traditional jazz literature with application to worship practice.
Chapel Orchestra is open to the entire Seminary community. The Orchestra leads the Seminary family in worship by providing music for chapel each week. Students who participate will receive chapel credit on the days they perform.
Chapel Choir performs once a week in one of the Seminary's three weekly chapel services. It is open to all students at Southwestern Seminary. Students who participate will receive chapel credit on the days they perform.
