Retired professor, Dan Kent, passes away
FORT WORTH, Texas (SWBTS)-Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary extends its condolences to the family of Dr. Dan Kent, retired professor of Old Testament. Dr. Kent passed away June 26 after spending nearly two weeks in the hospital from a heart attack.
Southwestern Seminary remembers Kent for his 19 years of service to the institution. During his time, he served as acting chairman of the Old Testament department, associate dean of the doctor of philosophy degree, and editor of the Southwestern Journal of Theology
Kent enjoyed making the Old Testament fun through class participation and his trademark “Old Testament in the News” class discussions, where he showed references to the Old Testament in contemporary art and media. As an author, he contributed to several books and commentaries.
Prior to joining the faculty at Southwestern, Kent served as a pastor for 13 years and taught at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas. Kent is survived by his wife, Barbara Kent; son, Blake Kent, his wife, Becky Kent and their son, Stephen Kent, all of Pearl City, Hawaii; daughter, Barrett Kent Border, her husband, Bruce Border and their son, Benjamin Border of Fort Worth; daughter, Leslie Kent Cappo, her husband, Michael Cappo and their daughter, Sarah Cappo of Shawnee, Okla.

Southwestern Seminary celebrates its centennial in 2008. Since its founding, the seminary has trained and sent out over 40,000 graduates to serve in local churches and mission fields around the world. In 1908, B.H. Carroll established the seminary on the campus of Baylor University. It was moved to its current location on Seminary Hill in Fort Worth in 1910 and was placed under the direction of the Southern Baptist Convention in 1925. Paige Patterson was elected as the eighth president of the seminary in 2003.
