Warren C. Hultgren passes away at 89
TULSA, Okla. (SWBTS) – Warren C. Hultgren, longtime pastor of First Baptist Church in Tulsa, Okla., and alumnus of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, died Nov. 14. He was 89.
Hultgren, who graduated with a Bachelor of Divinity from Southwestern in 1950, became pastor of First Baptist Tulsa in 1957 and was named pastor emeritus upon his retirement in 1992. He was loved by many for his pastoral heart, congenial personality and sense of humor.
In 1997, Southwestern inaugurated the Warren C. Hultgren Chair of Ministerial Counseling. Funding for the endowed academic chair was provided by members of First Baptist Tulsa in honor of their pastor.
Hultgren served Southern Baptists in denominational leadership as president of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma and as a vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention. He also actively served in the Tulsa community.
Prior to his arrival at First Baptist, Hultgren served as pastor at churches in Oklahoma, Louisiana and Texas. He earned his undergraduate degree from Hardin-Simmons University, where he met his wife of 64 years, Wanda.
Hultgren is survived by his wife, two sons, a daughter, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services are planned for Nov. 20 at First Baptist Tulsa.
