Alumnus, former faculty member Rick Byargeon dies

FORT WORTH, Texas (SWBTS) – After a courageous struggle with cancer, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary alumnus and former faculty member Rick W. Byargeon died in his home on April 4, 2013.

Byargeon earned his Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern in 1984 and his Ph.D. in Old Testament in 1991. In 2001, he came onto the faculty at Southwestern as associate professor of Old Testament. During his academic career, he also served at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the Baptist Theological Seminary in Singapore. He also published numerous articles and translated the book of Ecclesiastes in the Holman Christian Standard Bible.

For eight years, Byargeon also served as the pastor of Temple Baptist Church in Ruston, La., where funeral services will be held on April 8 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Rick W. Byargeon Missions Memorial Fund.

Byargeon is survived by his wife Jonann and their son Will.
