Financial freedom more than just debt free

FORT WORTH, Texas (SWBTS) – Freedom from debt is not an end in itself, financial experts said at the It’s a New Day financial stewardship conference. The conference, held April 8 at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, equipped participants with biblical principles to help manage their own finances and to help others get out of debt.

“True financial freedom is being in a position financially where when God prompts, we can respond,” said Dave Scobey, director of seminars for Crown Financial Ministries. Scobey’s areas of expertise include basic money management, credit, spending analysis and debt avoidance and elimination strategies.

Scobey warned students about becoming captivated or overwhelmed by money. Enslavement to debt often prohibits Christians from giving and serving in Kingdom ministries, such as mission trips, church plants and evangelism efforts.

The conference was organized through the cooperation of Southwestern’s Center for Biblical Stewardship, Crown Financial Ministries and the Southern Baptist Convention’s (SBC) executive committee.

Students and faculty received free conference registration and were also treated to lunch. The “It’s a New Day” conference helps individuals recognize that God owns everything and they are given stewardship of the resources he gives them. Helping students and ministers free themselves from financial burdens and debt allows them to follow the Lord’s leading unhindered.
