Local ministry answers students’ prayers

For more than 15 years, a local ministry has been the answer, for many Southwestern Seminary students, to a biblical prayer: “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matt. 6:11).

Under the leadership of Coby and Vivian Sutherland, Daily Bread Ministry has provided free food, like bread, cereals and canned foods, for seminary students and their families every week since 1995. The ministry distributes food at the RAC every Tuesday, beginning at noon.

“I’ll probably never be a great preacher, like Billy Graham or Jack Graham or Dr. Patterson,” Sutherland said, “but the one thing I can do is feed seminary students. That is one thing I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that God has called me to do.”

According to Sutherland, love for Christ compels Daily Bread Ministry to serve seminary students. Sutherland takes seriously Christ’s words: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me” (Matt. 25:40).

“It is a blessing” to provide for the needs of students, Sutherland added. The only part of this ministry that saddens him, he said, is that most supporters of Daily Bread Ministry never have the opportunity to see the joy that the ministry brings to students.

In addition to their weekly distributions, Daily Bread Ministry has organized a Christmas Toy Giveaway at the RAC, Dec. 13. Parents can register their children for the toy giveaway during the Daily Bread Ministry each Tuesday between Nov. 1 and Nov. 29.

The Christmas Toy Giveaway is sponsored by First Baptist Church of Fort Worth, South Hills Baptist Church, Northgate Baptist Church, and Pleasant Grove Church Number Two in Boyd, Texas.
