Once met in hardware store, Md. church plant celebrates 25 years

FORT WORTH, Texas (SWBTS) -- A Southwesterner’s faithfulness to answer a call to church plant in Maryland resulted in the local news recognizing him and his church for 25 years of ministry.

Explorehoward.com, an online guide for Howard County, Md., said Mark Massey responded to a recruitment effort by Southwestern Seminary to establish new churches in the state. Massey earned his Master of Divinity from Southwestern in 1984. Friendship Baptist Church (FBC) in Sykesville, Md., celebrated its 25th anniversary on June 5.

Massey planted FBC and currently serves the church as senior pastor. Fellow Southwestern alumnus David Miller, who earned his Master of Arts in Religious Education in 1992, serves with him as the discipleship pastor.

FBC met in various locations during the first years of formation, including a local hardware store.

Part of the Southern Baptist Convention, FBC is prominent in the community and its members are “widely recognized” for being greeters at the annual Howard County Fair, reported explorehoward.com.
