Matriculation
Library
The A. Webb Roberts Libraryprovides research materials to off-campus students bylending directly (by mail) from the Fort Worth campus libraries, providing telephone reference service, computer access to the seminary library computer system, and making cooperative arrangements with local libraries. Current students can access library resources online using the “Online Research” tab in any of their Blackboard courses.
Where to Buy Textbooks
Textbooks can be obtained from the LifeWay Bookstore on the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary Fort Worth Campus. If you are within driving distance, you can visit the store at 4540 James Ave., Fort Worth, TX. The bookstore can also ship you these books. You may contact them by telephone at 1-800-656-2215 or via e-mail: southwesternseminary.4688@lifeway.com.
A list of the textbooks required for online classes will be posted several weeks in advance.
The Learning Network
"The Learning Network" is a modification of 'The Learning Web" developed by Palloff and Pratt in their book, Lessons from the Cyberspace Classroom. For an online course the Learning Network is the active learning interaction between the professor, student, other students, curriculum, and information services. This interactive network of learning results not only in everyone involved gaining biblical and theological knowledge. It also makes a discernable spiritual impact upon both students as they learn how the class material applies to spiritual disciplines. They also learn how to apply the principles learned to a ministry setting. The Discussion Board and Chat Room on Blackboard are two tools that help create community in each online class.
How to Prepare Before Classes Begin
You need to have Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word 2003 or 2007, and Microsoft Power Point 2003 or 2007, and WinZip to read the documents in online courses. If you do not have these programs you can download a free reader for each one from the SWBTS web site. If you need any or all of these free readers, go to the “Download and Resources” page on the SWBTS web site: http://www.swbts.edu/index.cfm?pageid=819 and select the appropriate software.
You ought to have an Internet connection that is faster than dial-up in order to effectively go through class material. DSL, cable modem, and other options are available for faster work on the Internet.
E-License
All new students are required to complete the "New Student Essentials/E-License Test" modules which will not only orient you to Southwestern Seminary, but will also help teach you basic computer skills that are necessary for you to be successful in any of your classes at Southwestern.
If you are a new online student living at a distance and do not have a copy of the Southwestern Style Manual with StyleEase CD, please contact Web-BasedEducation@swbts.edu as soon as possible to have one mailed to you. Returning students and those living near campus may contact Southwestern Outfitters at (817) 923-1921 ext. 2107. You WILL need this to pass the E-License test and complete your written assignments.
