FORT WORTH, Texas (SWBTS) – Southwestern Seminary president Paige Patterson and his wife Dorothy received two blessings—dedications of a university guest room and a children’s book—while in Romania, May 21-30. The Pattersons visited the country to teach at Emanuel University of Oradea, where President Patterson serves on the board of trustees. President Patterson taught classes on the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, and Mrs. Patterson taught women’s classes on the beatitudes.
During the visit, the university dedicated an apartment suite for “protocol guests” in honor of the Pattersons. Ilie Soritau, an evangelism and Baptist history professor at Emanuel, said they dedicated the room for two reasons: “First of all, to thank them for their involvement and dedication to the school and Dr. Patterson's role as chairman on our board of trustees. Secondly, it is to thank them for their hospitality and service to all who come in contact with them.”
Soritau and his family are intimately acquainted with the Pattersons’ hospitality. In 2005, his daughter Tori was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a cancer that attacks the nervous system, and the family encountered difficulties finding treatment in Romania. Mrs. Patterson made arrangements and urged the family to come to Fort Worth. She provided a furnished duplex apartment for the family while Tori received medical treatment at Cook Children’s Hospital.
Ilie’s wife Raelene wrote a children’s book based on their experience, titled “A Princess Story,” and dedicated it to Mrs. Patterson, including her as a main character in the book.
“These real events were written as a fairy tale for children with Mrs. Patterson (Grandma Dottie) as Tori's fairy godmother,” Ilie said.
The book details the family’s difficult journey through treatment for Tori’s cancer, giving God the glory for carrying the family through it and for miraculously healing Tori. The story concludes with a gospel presentation.
Mark Henn, a 30-year veteran animator for the Walt Disney Company, provided illustrations for the book. Henn served as supervising animator for major films including The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Mulan and The Princess and the Frog.
