Seminary’s church music workshop themed around the glory of God
Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary’s annual Church Music Workshop Feb. 2-4 will center on the theme “The Glory of God.”
Amidst the modern challenges of worship ministry, the conference is intended to provide an environment of “refreshment, celebration and learning” for anyone involved in or leading church music, according to Jill Sprenger, Southwestern Seminary’s associate professor of piano and an organizer of the conference.
A new feature at this year’s conference will be the round table luncheon during which experienced, respected church music experts will discuss the integrity of the worship minister. Guest speakers will be Chuck Fromm, editor of Worship Leader magazine, Vernon Sanders, editor of Creator magazine, Bruce Stevenson, music minister at Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco, Texas, and Warren Pearson, minister of music at Southcliff Baptist Church in Fort Worth.
The church music conference will also feature a “Celebration of Worship” at 8 p.m. Feb. 3 in the seminary’s Center for Leadership Development. The celebration will include choral music, harpist Greg Buchanan, and the seminary’s group of musical ambassadors, Southwestern Sound. The evening will culminate with a sermon by Tom Elliff, senior vice president for spiritual nurture and church relations at the International Mission Board.
Breakout sessions during the conference will address subjects affecting all areas of worship ministry. The use of media, drama and music in worship; the appropriate use of traditional and contemporary music; and the spiritual life of the worship minister are among the many breakout sessions being offered. The sessions will be led by a variety of ministers, musicians and worship professionals from across the United States.
The conference will also feature the third annual gala concert of sacred music at the Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass Performance Hall at 8 p.m. Feb. 2. The gala concert, which drew more than 1,200 people last year, will feature Southwestern Seminary’s Oratorio Chorus, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, harpist Greg Buchanan and organist Al Travis.
Buchanan has been a much sought-after Christian performer in the United States for more than 23 years. He is unique in owning and performing with the electronic acoustic Grand Harp, crafted by Lyon and Healy Harp Manufacturers of Chicago. Buchanan also performs on the Celtic Irish folk harp and Kin, or lyre, as well.
Travis is also a well-known and honored organist. He is the chair of the Organ Department and distinguished professor of organ at Southwestern Seminary.
Individual tickets for the Gala are $20 to $35 and may be purchased through the box office at the Bass Performance Hall by calling 817-212-4280, or toll-free 1-877-212-4280.
