Report highlights scholarly activities of Southwestern Seminary, TBC faculty

In a recent report to the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary Board of Trustees, David S. Dockery, interim provost, shared an overview of the scholarly activities of the current faculty from 2019-2021.

“The Southwestern faculty includes serious scholars, skilled teachers, and devoted practitioners who collaboratively bring together commitments to innovative and effective teaching as well as service to churches and denominational and evangelical entities across the country and around the world,” Dockery said. “Moreover, many faculty members are actively engaging with the academy and the culture while publishing their research in academic journals and in books published by well-respected publishers, while also presenting their work in regional, national, and global settings.”

The report highlights the scholarly work of the faculty in research and publication, engagement, integration, and teaching.

The report includes the published work of Southwestern Seminary and Texas Baptist College (TBC) faculty and reflects more than 30 volumes that were authored or edited by professors from both schools. More than a dozen publishers are represented in the publications. Some of the titles include The B.H. Carroll Pulpit, edited by Adam W. Greenway, president of Southwestern Seminary and TBC (Seminary Hill Press); Christian Worldview Handbook, edited by Dockery (B&H); Make Disciples of All the Nations: A History of Southern Baptist International Missions, edited by John Massey, Mike Morris, and Madison Grace II (Kregel); Brahms’s A German Requiem: Reconsidering Its Biblical, Historical, and Musical Contexts, by R. Allen Lott (University of Rochester Press); and Scripture-Guided Worship by Joseph R. Crider (Seminary Hill Press).

Faculty also wrote more than 75 chapters and articles in books published by Zondervan, Crossway, Oxford University Press, Randall House, and Lexham, among others. Contributors include Coleman Ford, Madison Grace, and Malcolm Yarnell in Historical Theology (B&H); Carl Bradford and Matt Queen in History of Evangelism in North America (Kregel); Jonathan Arnold in In Essence One, In Person Three (H&E); and Benjamin Skaug in Biblical Spirituality (Crossway).

The faculty of both schools contributed more than 100 scholarly articles to more 40 different academic journals, periodicals, and online publications. Titles of publications include the Southwestern Journal of Theology, the Journal of Psychology and Christianity, Christianity Today, Christian Scholars Review, 9 Marks Journal, The Gospel Coalition, Ethics and Medicine, SBC Life, Journal of Spiritual Formation and Soul Care, Journal for Baptist Theology and Ministry,and Artistic Theologian.

Members of the faculty provided general editorship for The Bible in Ancient Christianity (Brill) and Reclaiming the Christian Intellectual Tradition (Crossway). Additionally, professors served as the co-editor of Theology for the People of God (B&H) and consulting editor of the Christian Studies Commentary (B&H). More than a dozen faculty members provided editor, associate editor or consulting editor services for journals and periodicals including the Southwestern Journal of Theology, the Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society, the Journal for Baptist Theology and Ministry, Seminary Hill Press and the Oxford Centere for Baptist Studies.

In addition to providing oversight to a dozen musical videos, Southwestern Seminary and TBC faculty served in leadership roles and as senior fellows for the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, the Center for Baptist Renewal, the Colson Center for Christian Worldview, the Evangelical Theological Society, and the International Alliance for Christian Education. Professors provided academic lectures and speaking presentations for 11 seminaries, including all six Southern Baptist seminaries; 20 colleges and universities; and for 25 consortiums, societies, and institutes. Academic scholarship was also exhibited in practical ways by service on church staffs and through equipping opportunities through the International Mission Board, the North American Mission Board, Lifeway, 10 state conventions, and dozens of associations.

Faculty were interviewed and quoted by 11 newspapers, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Washington Times, and The Wall Street Journal; four magazines, including WORLD Magazine, Christianity Today, the Christian Post, and Idea Magazine; and more than 80 podcasts.

In addition to works that have been published, faculty members have contracts and commitments for more than 30 books and 25 chapters for multi-authored works that will be released in the next few years. Some of these include The Authority and Sufficiency of Scripture, edited by Greenway and with chapters written by Southwestern Seminary faculty members (Seminary Hill Press); A History of Southern Baptists by Gregory A. Wills (B&H); Introduction to North American Missiology by Travis Kerns (B&H); and A New Vision for SBC Student Ministry by Richard Ross (Seminary Hill Press).

Dockery expressed gratitude for the scholarship the faculty brings to the classroom as they teach students of each institution.

“Southwestern students are blessed to study with these quality colleagues,” Dockery said. “I am honored to serve alongside the gifted and dedicated faculty members who serve Southwestern Seminary so well in so many different ways.”
