Dr. Magnuson serves as professor of Christian ethics at Southwestern Seminary. He previously taught at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. At Southern Seminary he served as the director of the Commonweal Project on Faith, Work and Human Flourishing. He also serves as the executive director of the Evangelical Theological Society.

Dr. Magnuson’s research and writing interests include the structure of ethics, with attention to teleology, virtue, and divine commands, as well as contemporary issues related to family, sexuality, reproductive technologies, the dignity of human life, and a theology of work. He also serves on the editorial board for Themelios and the American Friends of Tyndale House.

Dr. Magnuson has recently published Invitation to Christian Ethics: Moral Reasoning and Contemporary Issues (Kregel, 2020). He is also the author of “Ethical and Moral Reasoning” in Faith and Learning: A Handbook for Christian Higher Education (B&H, 2012) and “Sources for Ethics” in Christian Worldview Handbook (Holman Reference, 2019). Dr. Magnuson has contributed journal articles for the Southern Baptist Journal of Theology, Cannon and Culture, and the Augustine Collegiate Review. He is a member of Evangelical Theological Society and in addition to his duties as executive director he chairs the Christian Ethics steering committee. He is also a research fellow at the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission and an Oikonomia Fellow for Acton University.

Dr. Magnuson is married to Katherine and they have four children, Karl, Haaken (pronounced Hawken), Hannah, and Broder.
