RESEARCH INTEREST

Dr. Yang is interested in research projects in the follow areas: the doctrine of the Trinity, Cross-cultural missions, gender studies, spiritual warfare, theological translation, online education, and theological education.

Dr. Yang serves as the director of Chinese language programs and associate professor of world Christianity. Prior to coming to faith in Christ, she was an atheist and feminist, mocking Christianity when she came to the US as an international student. However, God’s amazing grace transformed her in the last several days of 2000 when she became a follower of Christ. Two and a half years after her conversion, she sensed God’s call on her life and enrolled in Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary while serving in a local church. After her graduation from Southwestern, she started to carry the responsibility of translating courses into Chinese and establishing the Chinese language programs at Southwestern.

Dr. Yang’s research and writing focuses on the doctrine of the Trinity, theological methods, gender roles, and cross-cultural missions. In 2021, she was invited by SBC executive committee to translate the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 into Chinese. Being from the Hmong people group, she also regularly speaks to Hmong audiences.

Dr. Yang presents regularly at academic conferences and is a member of the Evangelical Theological Society. She has also authored the book A Development Not a Departure: The Lacunae in the Debate of the Doctrine of the Trinity and Gender Roles (P&R Publishing, 2018). She has contributed some entries to Lexham Bible Dictionary (Lexham Press, 2016). She also writes for a lay audience, including blogs and devotionals.

Meet Hongyi Yang

When the Lord called Hongyi Yang, associate professor of World Christianity at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, to ministry she thought her previous education was a “waste.” Yang, who has taught at Southwestern since 2016, came to the United States in 2000 as an international student to begin studying in the field of media studies at the University of North Texas’s department of radio, television, and film.
