David S. Dockery, interim president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, has been named general editor of The NET Study Bible, Thomas Nelson, a division of HarperCollins Christian Publishing, announced Nov. 7.

In addition to Dockery, J. Daniel Hays, senior professor of Old Testament, and J. Scott Duvall, senior professor of New Testament, will serve as section editors of the Old and New Testaments, respectively.

“I am genuinely humbled and deeply honored by the invitation from Philip Nation and others at Thomas Nelson to serve as general editor for the New English Translation Study Bible,” Dockery said. “It is a rare privilege to serve in this capacity for a study Bible based on a major translation. I look forward to the opportunity to work closely with Scott Duvall and Danny Hays and the many outstanding contributors to this project.”

Nation is vice president and publisher of Bibles for Thomas Nelson.

More than 24 Southwestern Seminary and Texas Baptist College faculty and staff, and almost a dozen seminary alumni, will contribute to the study Bible, which will include more than 750,000 words of in-depth articles, commentary, and annotated study notes written for pastors, lay leaders, and new believers, according to a press release from Thomas Nelson. Articles will focus on words and themes in Scripture, biblical backgrounds, biblical interpretation, and theological topics.

The NET Study Bible will focus on theological exposition of each book of the Bible, helping readers understand the important background issues of each book, the meaning of the biblical text, and a theological understanding of the major themes throughout the Bible,” Dockery added. “The study notes will also include appropriate application and warmhearted devotional reflections. We are thrilled to have an opportunity to work closely with the capable scholars and practitioners who have agreed to participate in this project.”

The study Bible, the first of its kind based on the New English Translation of Scripture, is scheduled for release in 2027.
