Southwestern Seminary announces fall chapel schedule

Fall Chapel Schedule 2023

Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary released today the fall 2023 chapel schedule, which begins with Convocation and the investiture of President David S. Dockery on Aug. 22. Chancellor and Senior Professor of Pastoral Ministry and Evangelism O.S. Hawkins will preach on Aug. 24. The seminary’s board of trustees elected Dockery and Hawkins to their current roles in April.

The schedule of chapel speakers features a number of alumni, including C. Bart Barber, president of the Southern Baptist Convention and pastor of First Baptist Church of Farmersville, Texas; Jerry Rankin, president emeritus of the International Mission Board; Philip Levant, trustee of Southwestern Seminary and pastor of Iglesia Bautista La Vid of Fort Worth, Texas; Tony Mathews, senior strategist of missional ministries at the Southern Baptist of Texas Convention; Spencer Plumlee, pastor of First Baptist Church of Mansfield, Texas; Jack Graham, senior pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church of Plano, Texas; and Todd Pylant, pastor of First Baptist Church of Benbrook, Texas.

Other guest speakers include Zane Pratt, vice president for global training, International Mission Board; Ron Man, director, Worship Resources International; Robert Sloan, president, Houston Christian University, Houston, Texas; and James Kang, executive director of the Council of Korean Southern Baptist Churches.

Southwestern Seminary faculty and administrative staff are also scheduled to preach, including Joseph R. Crider, dean of the School of Church Music and Worship; Dean Sieberhagen, assistant professor of Islamic Studies, Vernon D. and Jeannette Davidson Chair of Missions, and director of the Islamic Studies Program; Brian Berry, instructor of biblical studies; Mark McClellan, director of Hispanic Programs and professor of missions; Jonathan Okinaga, assistant professor of biblical counseling; Chandler Snyder, interim vice president of enrollment and student services; Richard Ross, senior professor of student ministry; Todd Bates, dean of Texas Baptist College; and Chris Shirley, dean of the Jack D. Terry School of Educational Ministries.

The October 17 chapel service has been designated a “Day of Prayer” and Nate Nicholson, a Master of Divinity student in the School of Theology, is the student preacher for the November 16 chapel service.

Chapel services are held every Tuesday and Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in the MacGorman Chapel and Performing Arts Center on the campus of Southwestern Seminary. Services are also broadcast live at swbts.edu/live.
