Prison transformed by seminary program

ROSHARON, Texas (SWBTS) – Southwestern Seminary’s extension program in the maximum security Darrington Unit prison began five years ago and now has 180 students studying to earn their Bachelor of Science in Biblical Studies. On May 9, the program graduated its second class of “field ministers,” inmates who commit to work in small teams with fellow inmates at prisons throughout the state. Texas has the largest prison population in the country, and in the vast system, violence and recidivism are persistent problems that lawmakers hope seminarians can address.

An article published in the Los Angeles Times explored this seminary program and the impact it has had not just on the students, but on Darrington itself.
