Path to seminary success is partnership of student, spouse and God

Student wives were encouraged to build partnerships with their spouses and God at Metochai’s first meeting of the fall semester, Aug. 28. Metochai, Southwestern Seminary’s organization for student wives, gives women the opportunity to gather for fellowship, develop new friendships and receive spiritual encouragement from mentors throughout the year.

The theme of Metochai for the new school year is “Confident in Christ,” reflective of Philippians 1:3-6—“I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all, in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now. For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”

The Scripture is “a promise to us that God is not going to leave us flailing about,” said 2017-2018 Metochai President Sammi Carby. When life brings challenges, she said, “He is using these things to perfect us. He continues to work on us behind the scenes, whether we know it or not.”

The evening’s speaker, Hope Queen, continued the message of Philippians, focusing on a “partnership in the Gospel.” Queen, who is married to Southwestern’s L.R. Scarborough Chair of Evangelism, Matt Queen, explained that day-to-day life is a series of projects to be completed. For example, she noted that “we all have to work on our houses in some form or fashion, whether you’re in a tiny apartment or a luxury house.”

In Philippians and again in 2 Corinthians 8, Queen said, God encourages a project—winning souls—to be completed. “He is the doer,” she continued. “All we have to do is get onboard.”

Queen emphasized the importance of partnerships with God to achieve great things. “The partnership began when you got saved. From then, He uses you until you see Him in heaven. Are you yearning, in that partnership, to be available?”

She encouraged the women to see opportunities for a partnership with God in small, daily tasks. “Your work here [at Southwestern] is a partnership with your God and with your husband. Seminary is not the project. It is just one phase.”

Metochai is held monthly in Seelig Banquet Room in the Naylor Student Center. Free childcare is available for children ages 2 months through sixth grade upon prior reservation.
