Dr. Caldwell serves as professor of church history in the School of Theology. His research focuses on the history and theology of evangelicalism in North America, with special interest in the revivals in eighteenth and nineteenth-century North America and the theology of Johnathan Edwards.

Dr. Caldwell has authored several books: Theologies of the American Revivalists: From Whitefield to Finney (IVP Academic, 2017), Trinitarian Theology of Jonathan Edwards: Text, Context, and Application (Ashgate, 2012), and Communion in the Spirit: The Holy Spirit as the Bond of Union in the Theology of Jonathan Edwards (Paternoster, 2006). Additionally, he has contributed chapters to the following works: The Oxford Handbook of Jonathan Edwards (OUP, 2021), Pentecostal Theology and Jonathan Edwards (T&T Clark, 2020), Regeneration, Revival, and Creation: Religious Experience and the Purposes of God in the Thought of Jonathan Edwards (Pickwick, 2020), A Legacy of Preaching: Historical and Theological Introductions (Zondervan, 2017). He has contributed journal articles for the following publications, Themelios, Calvin Theological Journal, Revival and Reformation, and the Southwestern Journal of Theology.

Dr. Caldwell is a member of the Evangelical Theological Society, American Society of Church History, and the Conference on Faith and History. He regularly presents at the Evangelical Theological Society.

Dr. Caldwell is married to Lisa, and they have two teenage daughters. He is a long-time guitarist and enjoys running.
